Dear Friends and Family,
Northern California had a pre-holiday treat! Two weeks before Christmas we woke up to a light dusting of snow that we see only every thirty years of so. Of course our crazy black lab was very excited and looking for someone to play with, but Brody and Keenan had to go to school. It would have made a great Christmas card photo if only it had not melted by the afternoon.
Unfortunately, Brody did not get a chance to practice driving in the snow. He turned 16 this month and has had his permit to practice for a few months. Because we have no school busing out here, it does make life easier when your teenager can drive, as long as they are safe and well prepared to handle the demands of driving....and hopefully all that will come together for Brody very soon. He is in his sophomore year of high school and doing fine. He decided to focus on tennis this year and not play basketball as they overlapped last year and he missed a month of the tennis season. I don’t think it will be much longer before he starts to beat Roger on the tennis court!
Keenan is in 8th grade this year, doing well in school and playing in his last year of CYO basketball and having his Dad as coach. He has not had his growth spurt yet and is about a foot smaller than everyone else on his team. Hopefully, he’ll gain a few inches before next year’s high school basketball season. Keenan also plays tennis and in the spring started umpiring little league baseball games. In May he broke his collar bone at school, and it put a bit of a damper on his summer as he had to let it heal for quite some time.
Over the summer, the boys and I took our annual trip to the Jersey Shore to visit Nanny and Ron. We had to leave Roger behind to stay with the dog….(just kidding - Roger had to work!) We were very excited to go to the new Yankee Stadium and took the ferry out of Atlantic Highlands. It was a beautiful summer night and we got a great view of Manhattan. Unfortunately, it was one of the longest games in baseball history and did not end until after 1am, when A-Rod hit a walk off homer at the bottom of the 15th inning. We got home at 4am. Needless to say we had plenty of baseball!
Roger has had a very good year....away from the office. He celebrated twenty years of marriage with his amazing wife in November, and had a winning USTA season on the tennis court!
I have been busy with my volunteer work at UCSF, as a member of the Family Advisory Council and working with the Compass Care Program that was so wonderful to Quincy and our family at the end. It feels really good to give back, and I know Quincy would want to help in any way she could if she were still here…..so I like that I am just continuing her goodness.
The Quincy Lee Foundation has had a banner year! My dear uncle, Frank Matthews, hosted a fund-raiser in honor of his business partner and friend who passed away in February, and donated all the proceeds to the Quincy Lee Foundation. It was at the Parker House at the Jersey shore in September. We worked on it in July when I was back there and I flew in a week before to help with preparation. It was a great night with over 15 restaurants, live music, raffles and silent auction. Quincy’s godmother, Maureen DePolo and her husband, Randy named their racehorse pony after Quincy and donated a share of her that was auctioned at the fundraiser. All our friends and family were amazing with all the help and support they gave us. We raised over $41,000 that night, which pushed the Quincy Lee Foundation over $100,000. We are now aiming for $1 million in fund-raising to make the Quincy Lee Fellowship at UCSF a reality. It sounds like a lot, but I am confident we will hit our goal...maybe not in the next few years, but it will happen!
